Abstract

The contribution aims to examine the penitential discipline developed by St. Columban with particular attention to the role played by works of penance in order to rebuild the spiritual health of the penitent, severely compromised by evil and disequilibrium generated by sin. To do this we first take into consideration the Life of Columbanus and his disciples and some writings attributed to the saint. In order to frame the proposal, we consider the system of tariffed penance based on the penitential books, with some hypotheses
about its origin and its development. Finally, we focus the attention on the penitential traditionally attributed to the irish monk, to deepen the remedies of penance which he prescribed in reference to the wounds of sin and the person of the sinner, with a hint of the embryonic ritual practices emerging from the text.
