Civil Religion: A Positive Opportunity?

Abstract

It is right to aspire to a civil religion? Or rather, should Christians tend toward a state-supported religion that favours faith and in some way becomes a supporting column of the life of the community irrespective of the personal adhesion to Christ? In other words does a religion without faith make sense? A religion as a purely identitary bastion? This article seeks to argue that a civil religion is damaging as much from a civil as from a theological point of view, because the essence of faith is to propose itself without imposition.
