Between Memory and Hope

The Communion of Saints in E. Johnson and I. Zizioulas

Abstract

The article explores the dogma of the communion of saints in dialogue with two contemporary theologians: Elizabeth Johnson and Ioannis Zizioulas. Both authors draw on the concept of memory to reinterpret, in a pneumatological key, the social dimension of Christian hope. This vision integrates the sacramental dimension with the ethical dimension and opens up to a cosmic and ecological
perspective that allows us to understand the meaning of deification (paradise), purification (purgatory) and perdition (hell).
