Abstract

After a brief historical overview of the evolution of the discipline regard-ing priestly celibacy, this article proposes a critical re-reading of the argu-ments traditionally adopted as reasons of «convenience» for such a choice, showing to what degree they pose questions today. From here, the research breaks off in three directions, among them intertwined: a presentation of the elements in support of the discipline of priestly celibacy, united to some indications for living it out in a healthy way; the exploration of the positive connection that can also exist between priesthood and matrimony; a framing of and a reflection on the question of the viri probati.
