The ancient Milanese tradition of assigning a festive character to Saturday has found reconfirmation throughout the centuries, becoming a distinctive feature of the Ambrosian liturgy as compared to the customary practice of the western Churches. The way in which the renewed 2008 lectionary is laid out assigns to each Saturday a reading taken from the Pentateuch. In harmony with the content of the torah reading, Epistle and Gospel allow the torah to be interpreted in the light of its new- testament realisation. Of particular interest are the formulas of the five Saturdays of Lent which this contribution undertakes to analyse, together with the eucology and its hymns.
